Again, social media is a new toy. It's use as a marketing agent for spreading political ideas is nearly brand new. In the short run it's ugly, but dangerous?

The real danger is from outside agents mingling in internal affairs, and from inside agents with selfish agendas and way too much money.

Both can be dealt with in a robust democracy.

Is the US democracy robust? The issues you mentioned, and many more, are being actively discussed here. There are avenues of change available. There are legislative fixes available and even out there ready to be implemented. The issue is a divided electorate, which, btw, has been divided since long before the advent of social media. Bush v Gore comes to mind.

(as an aside, the unhinging of the Republican party has its roots going back to pre-Nixon days. The Republicans consciously chose to fight Johnson's civil rights agenda as a way of catering to southern voters knowing full and well that to do so was to embrace racism as a party. It has nearly literally unhinged them. Cognitive dissonance and all that, they have lost their way.)

With an electorate as divided as ours, true structural change is (currently) all but impossible. Step change, however, is not.

Our democracy is robust. It has survived Trump. It has in the past surrendered to racism as a political tool, but if there is one thing Trump did with extraordinary effectiveness it was to spotlight the shadows in which racism thrived in our society. But he also, ironically, empowered the progressive wing of the Democratic party.

The electorate is changing. The old white guys like me are dying off. Covid is killing many of them off. And all the while the political earthmovers are working overtime. We're seeing the paving of a new political playing field, shifted far, far to the left of anything any of us ever thought possible even 5 years ago. It will take time, but thank you Trump. Thank you race-baiting algorithms!
