But isn't that more or less the classic argument against democracy? The 'omg are you kidding, rule by the ignorant masses!' argument.

I agree social media gives all a potential voice. I disagree that that's a bad thing. What it is, is a new thing, and like a fresh pair of boots it takes time to wear them in. For society at large that could mean a generation or more.

Democracy is, has been, and always will be messy. Not just 'clothes on the floor' messy, but rather 'china plates flung across the room' messy. Even 'punch in the nose' messy.

The problem now is a right wing that thinks the left is either immoral, elitist, un-American. or some combination, and the left thinks the right has become unhinged in their anger at the left.

The biggest danger isn't the voices clamoring, it's the frontal attack on the vote as a means of adjudicating political arguments. This didn't originate from millions of little voices clamoring. Not at all. This is a wholly new development originating from one ex-president.

The true, unappreciated beauty of democracy is that it allows society to harness the skills, ambition and vision of the born leaders of the world without having to suffer the consequences of the unlimited power most born leaders tend to naturally accrue and strive for. Because we don't have to throw them out. We can vote them out!
