Excellent stuff. I would add that all we know or can know is interpretative.
The coffee cup before me is ‘detected’ by interactions occurring in my eyes. It's like an ATC radar detecting an airliner. Radar doesn't display the actual airliner, but only an interpreted version in a contextually meaningful fashion. So with the coffee cup. My awareness of the coffee cup is a contextually meaningful interpretation of the detected information.
Art, as I see it, is the same. It's interpretative. It presents a form of reality in, it is hoped, a contextually meaningful way. That is the power of it. Done right, it is like another ‘sense,’ presenting information about our world in a meaningful way.
