I would not put it this starkly. We are not ‘given’ life.

As I see it we are the life we lead. Any ultimate ‘give’ and ‘take,’ pay out pay back, is relative, ultimately, only to ourselves. As we give to life we are granted back in ways usually immeasurable. As we take from life we are debited back in ways often unspeakable. Not because there is a scale out there somewhere, and a ledger, but because the life we add to, is ours, and the life we take from is, in the end, ours as well.

Do unto other as you would have other do unto you, because, really, as you do unto others you do unto yourself. The ultimate quid pro quo!
