Maybe free will isn’t about response in the moment, but response going forward. Pre-controlled response.
For example, we make a pre-determination that whatever our idiot boss says or does, we’re not going to respond in anger. So, when he does something idiotic, we don’t respond in anger. Pre-programmed.
Of course, like programming any computer, there are limits to what can be programmed.
So, maybe free-will isn’t about response at all. Maybe free-will is free-being? Maybe we (freely) misunderstand our very nature, in that we aren’t flesh and blood ‘objects.’ Rather, we are the ‘awareness of being’ a flesh and blood object. And what we have, as ‘awareness of being’…whatever…is the freedom to be ‘whatever.’ That we are being flesh and blood objects in a deterministic world who misunderstand their very nature is our freedom.
True freedom is unbounded. Meaning it’s not out of bounds to freely bind, and blind, oneself.
Just some thoughts. Thanks for the read!
