Reward v punishment, is that a reason to believe?

Is God a quid pro quo, you do for me and I do for you, kind of Being?

If you are the king and you learn that your subjects 'love' you only for the rewards you bestow upon them, would you feel good about that? They don't care about you, but only about their selfish rewards?

What does that say about them? What does it say about you, that you encourage selfish behavior by granting rewards and doling out punishment?

Sorry, but to me there is so, so much more to life then reward v punishment.
